In particular, we’re going to be talking about your big domino.
Something that we work with our clients with a lot, it’s figuring out what their big domino is. And if you’re like me, you know that dominoes are good for one thing. Lining them up, and then knocking them down. When I was a kid, we had this set called the Domino Rally Set. And my older brother and I would spend hours on the hallway, kitchen and sometimes the living room floor, setting up domino tracks, that we would then set off in sequence, and they would go all the way through the living room. You would often end in frustration and tears because if you made one mistake in domino rally, the whole afternoon of work, if somebody comes stomping down the stairs, it’ll knock everything over and ruin your day. So, it was a frustrating venture to do a domino rally track, but it was very, very satisfying to get all the way to the end, and hit that first domino, and watch it snake its way through the living room underneath the chair, you know, wherever it was, down the stairs, and complete the whole course. That same idea is something we carry over into our business with our clients everyday, and it’s a big deal in video marketing, and probably in life in general.
The idea is this, for all of us there’s one domino that if we knock that over, it will start a chain of events that will knock over domino after domino after domino, and lead us to the eventual success that we’re seeking. Whether that’s a purchase, a conversion, scheduling a conversation, someone visiting a website. Whatever it is, your video marketing efforts are driving people, or should be driving people to some sort of action. And if you can knock over that one domino with them, it will lead all the way through the chain of events to your desired result. The idea is, this one domino is the only thing you need to focus on. It’s the only thing that really matters, because if you knock it over, everything else will fall into place.
Now, this relates to video marketing in a huge way, because when we create video content, the truth is we can pack a lot of stuff into a video, a lot of information in there, a lot of tidbits, a lot of beautiful little design pieces, and corky little fun sounds. But the reality is, people are gonna walk away from that video with one thing. They are gonna remember one idea, take one action, have one thought following that, maybe even when they share it, there’s one reason they share it. People walk away with one thing. And when you’re creating video content, each and every time you do that, you need to think what is the one domino we’re driving after here? And if that content does not drive towards that one domino that knocks over the first one, that knocks over the second one, and leads to the succession of events that takes you to your ultimate goal, then it’s not on point, it’s not on purpose, it’s not on brand, it’s not on whatever you want to call it. If it’s not knocking over that one domino for you, it’s not serving its intended purposes.
Far too often, we see content created running in all sorts of different directions, grasping, and pulling, and tugging through people’s attention. And even if it gets people’s attention, it doesn’t have the desire to result, because it’s not focused on the one domino that’s most important to your business, to your organization, to your product, or whatever it is. Now, the way we can practically align ourselves with this thought or this theory, is to sit down and figure out what is the most important thing that your business, organization or product just trying to get people to understand or to do. Maybe your product solves a huge issue, and your one domino is helping people realize that that issue is a big deal. Because once you can help them understand that this issue is a big deal, you can knock over the domino with your solution. Your solution is the answer to their biggest problem. Whatever it is, you have to figure out what to focus on, then with laser intensity focus on that thing because when it falls down, everything else after it also falls down.
The moral of the story is have focus when you create any thing. Don’t try to do too many things at once, try to do one thing, see how it works, see how people respond. Maybe you need to adjust your one big domino over time. Maybe as your company or your organization grows, your domino also grows, it changes, your focus changes a little bit. It’s okay for these things to evolve over time, and it’s okay for us to be singularly focused on one thing, because that leads to results, it leads to conversions, it leads to conversations, and it certainly leads to success in whatever you’re doing. We can’t try to do too much, we can’t think we can achieve everything with one video or one piece of content. It has to be a slow turn going towards one domino. So I urge you, figure out what that domino is, knock it over! Don’t be the kid that cries in the hallway because you tried to set up the whole set and everything fell over. I’m not speaking from past experience.
Make sure that everything you do is focused and on purpose with great intensity, because intensity multiplied by time equals results.
